A sad day for musicals. Woody Allen fans may smile indulgently at this fey attempt to create a musical in which almost none of the cast can sing, but it provides only embarrassment and fidgety bottoms for the rest of us. Some of the vocalising attempts here are so painful that one can only boggle at how bad Drew Barrymore's singing must have been for her to end up dubbed. Woody as usual rows gamely and occasionally wise-crackingly through a sea of his own neuroses while he attempts to woo and win Julia Roberts as the girl of his dreams. Then there's the problems of his extended family, not to mention the 'mad dog' killer that Woody's ex-wife (Goldie Hawn) has befriended in prison and taken in to her home on his departure from clink. The songs are all gorgeous standards and even survive some of the assaults on their lyrics.

Allen has produced yet another challenging and funny film, this time taking on the musical genre and bending it to his own unique vision. The musical numbers are the film's high point, displaying wonderful choreography ranging from a room full of dancing Groucho Marxes to a dancing couple in flight on the banks of the Seine. It's a witty, entertaining fantasy and a truly romantic escape. TV Times review get another job!!!
