A Down Under variation on Desperately Seeking Susan, this romantic comedy casts Rosanna Arquette again in the role of the bored young woman catapulted into a fantasy world. The film is well named: it's a sweet idea that almost works, but is seriously let down by bad direction and unsympathetic characters. Complete with her American accent, Arquette is cast as Wendy, a Sydney housewife with a boring husband (Bruce Spence) and a boring job who survives by immersing herself in romantic novels full of tall, dark and handsome strangers. When salesman hubby disappears inexplicably, Wendy encounters the man of her dreams (although the way Hugo Weaving plays this character, any woman with sense would run a mile). Arquette fans may wish to see how this all ends, but others may prefer, like the heroine, to go and read a good book. The film was once known as Wendy Cracked a Walnut.
