Bit of a collector's item this one, with Julie Christie and Alan Bates teaming up once more after their successful partnerships in Joseph Losey's The Go-Between and John Schlesinger's Far From the Madding Crowd. With Schlesinger at the helm here, Ms Christie jumped at the chance to be directed by him again (remember he'd led her to Oscar stardom in Darling). This HTV production, if not in the same league as the 1958 Hollywood version of Terence Rattigan's delightful play (which won Oscars for David Niven and Wendy Hiller), nicely captures the gentility of this quintessential piece of Englishness. Sit back and enjoy quality acting from an impressive ensemble.
