Executive produced, but not directed, by Spike Lee, this mix of thriller and political satire is strongly performed, if it eventually fails to hit the target in other areas. ER's Eriq LaSalle stars as Bruford Jamison, an advertising executive who has seriously compromised his African-American heritage, according to militant black group the Deprogramming and Restoration of Pride, known as the DROP squad. So they kidnap him with a view to re-educating him. Even if it may not be of mainstream interest, it's a valid theme. Unfortunately it gets the wrong treatment: heavy-handed and over-intense rather than sharp and satirical. Still, there are excellent performances from the cast, which includes Vondie Curtis-Hall and Ving Rhames as the leaders of the group. Watch out for a cameo from Lee in a chicken franchise commercial.
