In this gorgeously crafted French swashbuckler, the wickedly handsome Olivier Martinez cuts a dash as an 1830s exiled Italian officer, who is chased by Austrian assassins. He rescues rich French lady Juliette Binoche, who is searching for her husband, and they set off on a series of adventures across the beautiful but cholera-ridden Provence countryside. Director Jean-Paul Rappenau, who made the1990 hit Cyrano De Bergerac, has made a ravishing-looking, epic-scale film that moves at a tremendous, thundering pace, and he heads the team of three writers who have turned Jean Giono's romantic bestseller into such an exciting yarn.
