Set in post-World War Two France, this wordy, if unconventional fantasy romance, adapted from the novel by Simone de Beauvoir, tells the story of Regina (Irène Jacob), a temperamental young actress who longs for eternal fame. One day she meets Fosca (Stephen Rea), a mysterious man who seems more interested in his own inner world than those around him. Her interests aroused, Regina pursues him. Most of the film focuses on their subsequent conversations about love, life and death, made all the more interesting by the fact that Fosca reveals himself to be an immortal. An oddity, but reflectively charming.
