Writer David H Chase deservedly won an Emmy Award here for his teleplay about a teenage girl and her troubled relationship with her family. At the centre of this intelligent, realistic and moving TV film, well directed by the respected Lamont Johnson, there is a 24-carat performance by Mare Winningham as young Michele, returning to Minneapolis after running away from her humdrum family to the bright lights of New York and going on the game along the infamous 'Minnesota Strip'. Design and production values are spot-on, while the whole cast gives its best - particularly Hal Holbrook and Michael Learned as the parents, Ben Marley as the boyfriend and Heather McAdams as the younger sister. Not a happy story, but full of insight and understanding.
