This is a laddish, serio-comic attempt to examine the fanaticism of the British soccer fan. The re-living of a classic sporting event, however, is always a dangerous thing, since the live magic of the moment can't be recaptured - and the build-up to this one pitches us into the midst of some pretty uninteresting people. Paul (Colin Firth), a football-mad teacher, awaits the climax of the 1989 season, with Liverpool and Arsenal battling for the League Championship. When maths teacher Sarah (Ruth Gemmell) asks him to stay the night after nary so much as a date, it's hardly surprising he gets her pregnant. This only momentarily deflects his thoughts from the matter in hand: a match more vital than any Sarah might have in mind. Slips abound: Sarah never looks remotely pregnant, and even suggests they go on holiday together on 8 October. Not only is this in the football season, but in the school term as well!
