They do say that truth is stranger than fiction - and this true-life TV movie certainly proves the adage. It focuses on the moment in a young mother's life when she blindly decides to help her lover escape capture by police following the murder of two cops. Caught in the crossfire at a roadblock, the woman is handcuffed and forcibly separated from her kids, who are also in the car. Then, due to corruption in the legal system and the efforts of a ruthless district attorney who cares more for his career than justice, she is kept away from them for 16 unbelievable years. Mimi Rogers, the first wife of Tom Cruise, has the central role, and there's able support from Veronica Hamel (Joyce Davenport in Hill Street Blues) as the friend who campaigns selflessly to correct the wrongdoing. Two fine actresses who can always be relied upon to deliver spot-on performances, their careers have stubbornly failed to soar as high as they might given their early work on TV and in feature films as excellent as Someone to Watch Over Me.
