Dreamlike Canadian drama about a reclusive ex-rock star living alone in a ramshackle manor in the bleak Pacific Northwest and beset by people, who, alive and dead, demand pieces of him and his mind while he attempts to compose a symphonic masterpiece for whales. Sounds weird and it is. Slow, too, but somewhat redeemed by the relationship between Howl, the burned-out rocker, and Claire, a rough-edged girl on the run from the law who finds her way into his mansion and into his affections, a bit like Eliza Doolittle and Professor Higgins. Although not very successful, it's a film that remains both eerie and challenging.
