The actor attracted attention when he was cast in Roland Emmerich's disaster movie The Day After Tomorrow.
Born in New York's West Village and named after crime writer Dashiell Hammett, he first acted as part of Manhattan's City Kids theatre programme.
He made his feature debut playing a mentally retarded young man in the 1995 thriller Murderous Intent.
The following year he played a bully in the drama Sleepers and portrayed Romeo's cousin Benvolio in Baz Lurhmann's Romeo + Juliet.
Minor roles followed in Terrence Malick's The Thin Red Line and Wolfgang Peter's The Perfect Storm and Mihok also modelled for GQ magazine in 1998.
In 2002, he played Rusty in the comedy drama The Guru and also landed supporting roles in the thriller Dark Blue and and the action drama Basic with John Travolta.
In 2004, he played of Jason in the disaster movie The Day After Tomorrow and also starred in the comedy Connie and Carla .
He subsequently played Mr Frying Pan in Kiss Kiss Bang Bang and also starred in the conspiracy thriller Hollywoodland.
Recent work includes the children's drama Firehouse Dog and the Will Smith horror-thriller I Am Legend.
