Long before Forrest Gump or The Simpsons, this Capra-esque comedy played on the idea that being dumb and lazy were veritable virtues, if not the American Way. Henry Fonda is the particular under-achiever of the title and his smalltown slothfulness wins him a prize in a biggest loser competition - a place in Don Ameche's business school. Here, Fonda vaguely sets about winning friends and influencing people, in particular Ameche's girlfriend, played by Lynn Bari. Rambling, if likeable, the movie sees Fonda at his most laidback, as his character's lack of ambition and homespun philosophy of never hurrying anything predictably wins the day.
