It was probably about time that Disney remade its classic 1954 movie version of the Jules Verne underwater adventure yarn, but surely they could have cast it more strongly. Ben Cross is truly a damp squid as Captain Nemo (James Mason's old role), skipper of the futuristic submarine Nautilus, and Richard Crenna is not much more entertaining as Professor Aronnax, the marine biologist sent to investigate a mysterious giant sea creature. The production is very cramped and ordinary, the pacing hesitant, and the storytelling far from smooth. And in any case the original film is irreplaceable. Yet another version followed in 1997, with Michael Caine and Patrick Dempsey.
