An excellent account, directed by Jack O'Brien, of Arthur Miller's harrowing play about family secrets and lies. Set in the late Forties, the story concerns the unpleasant truths that come out when a family has finally to face the fact that one of the sons was killed in action in World War Two. Miller's narrative keeps you on the edge of your seat as layers of lies are uncovered and the cast prove themselves worthy of this superb piece, with James Whitmore hitting the right note as the stalwart family man and Michael Learned moving as his distressed wife. As the son Chris, the catalyst for the truth, Aidan Quinn is authoritative, if you overlook his mannered delivery. They are superbly supported by Joan Allen, as Ann, the fiancée of the dead man, and Zeljko Ivanek as her brother. A riveting drama that is just as relevant 50 years on.
