This glossy romantic combination of Broadcast News and A Star is Born gives us the impossibly glamorous pairing of Michelle Pfeiffer as the small-town girl who makes good as a TV reporter, and Robert Redford, as the seen-it-all newsroom veteran who helps her do it.

The film just coasts along for most of the way, then moves up a gear towards the end, with Pfeiffer trapped in a prison riot but, thanks to Redford's help on the phone, turning it into a sensational scoop - followed by Redford inevitably deciding to be his own man and not hang on to Michelle's impeccably-styled coat tails.

The stars bring typically laid-back charisma to their roles and there's a gem of a supporting performance by Kate Nelligan as Redford's ex-wife. Stockard Channing and James Rebhorn are more stereotyped (and faintly unlikely) sorts who help and hinder pilgrim Pfeiffer's progress.
