Set at pretty much the same time as A League of Their Own, which centred on women's baseball leagues, this socially-aware telefilm focuses on the black baseball leagues as they were operating just before the end of World War Two. Angular Delroy Lindo gives a compelling performance as Satchel Paige, one of several prominent black baseball players battling to become the first Afro-American Major Leaguer, spurred on by the US Baseball Commissioner's 1943 assertion that no black player would ever play in the Major Leagues while he was in control. At times a bit plodding under Kevin Rodney Sullivan's direction, the film still scores in the end, thanks to half-a-dozen committed performances.
