As ridiculously plotted as any James Bond film, this is nonetheless a real crowd-pleaser that equals any 007 film in the action stakes. Not surprisingly, Geena Davis is cast as a sort of Jane Bond, a US government assassin who has made a new identity for herself these past years after near-termination and amnesia. When Mitch (Samuel L Jackson), a private eye, uncovers her past, a car accident triggers repressed memories and corrupt federal agents discover a potential embarrassment who must be wiped out for good. Naturally Davis and Jackson bear charmed lives in the ensuing mayhem, in which enough hardware is blown apart to justify at least most of the $70million budget. Davis, escaping from death traps with the alacrity of a silent screen heroine, has her moments, but Jackson is the real scene-stealer here and has all the best lines.
