Shirley MacLaine, Liza Minnelli, Kathy Bates - a cast like this should guarantee a good film. And so it does, if not as good as perhaps one might expect. This drama is about Mary (MacLaine), a lonely widow who places an ad for a companion and meets Robin (Jennifer Grey). But the pressures of Mary's expectations are too much for the younger woman and she runs away. Mary and her noisy neighbor Cara (Minnelli) then set off in search of her. MacLaine and Minnelli play pretty much to type - one sharp-tongued and crotchety, the other loud and brash - while Bates does her bag lady bit. An enjoyable drama, and fans of the stars won't be disappointed. The writer/director is Ernest Thompson, who won an Oscar for his script for On Golden Pond.
