Mission: Impossible

Tom Cruise plays undercover agent Ethan Hunt, who devises a risky plan to expose the traitor who betrayed him and his colleagues. An undercover agent devises a risky plan to expose the traitor who betrayed him and his colleagues.

Fans of the TV series will love this elongated version, with dynamic special effects, an all-star cast and a spectacular climax above a supercharged train in a tunnel.

On the downside, there are parts of the plot which are confusing and some of the dialogue will fly by your ears in a buzz of jumbled sound.

No matter, here's intrepid Tom Cruise as the agent whose colleagues - including Jon Voight's Jim Phelps and guest star Emilio Estevez - are almost all blown away in a mission that proves all too impossible when somebody betrays it.

Are they all really dead? Who are the mysterious Max and Job? Are the guys Cruise hires to help him really on his side?

To answer these questions, look sharp to spot some of the answers in a movie where dazzlingly exciting set pieces take centre stage.

And really it is an ever so slightly impossible mission - but with an impressive soundtrack.

To say that this was the pinnacle of Tom Cruise's career is a sad reflection on his acting limitations. This is merely a by the numbers action movie with the usual cast of larger than life heroes and cardboard cut out villains for tommy boy to knock out. On the other hand it is very well done and has some clever set pieces, but you wouldn't want to watch this twice in one year although it's worth a dusting off now and again.

I thought this film was absolutely excellent. It was exciting and full of action yet contained an intricate plot with a sense of who-done-it mystery. The climax is brilliantly done and though the ending is nothing you wouldn't expect, it is still exhilirating to watch and includes some very good twists.

Tom Cruise is brilliant in this transformation from a hit TV-series to a massive blockbuster movie. With brilliant performances from Jon Voight and Ving Rhames, and excellent directing from the ever-popular Brain De Palma, Mission: Impossible proves to be one of the best movies of all time.
