This is a glossy remake of Henri-Georges Clouzot's classic Fifties chiller, in which the wife and mistress of a vicious schoolmaster collaborate to murder him. Sadly, that's where compliments must end, although Sharon Stone as the sexy schoolteacher has some fantastic, catty one-liners and Isabelle Adjani is perfect casting as the haunted, ethereal wife of the cruel headmaster (Chazz Palminteri) . Both women give excellent performances. Where the film fails is in its Hollywoodised ending and bland execution, snappy editing aside. Never mind - this is still an enjoyable enough thriller to curl up to. Just don't expect too much from it.
