Empire Records

This fun and jolly comedy drama set around Anthony LaPaglia's record store of the title is very much in the happy, anarchic spirit we've come to expect from director Allan Moyle. Early appearances from Liv Tyler and Renee Zellweger brighten the story of the New York store trying to prevent a corporate takeover.

The players are fresh and funny but then they have some fresh and funny dialogue at their command, even if there isn't much of a story or any real depth to the lark.

Maxwell Caulfield finally finds some gainful work, years after Grease 2 and The Colbys, sending himself up as a past-his-sell-by-date rock star who ends up in the store.

A sleeper that won't send you to sleep.

A 'Teen Movie' of the highest caliber. A story with larger than life characters and some truly hilarious moments. Scary ones too, you can't really miss Renne Zellwegers hissy fit or Ms Tylers moment of madness. It's all good fun though, and the typically mid-nineties soundtrack is cracking. It also contains one of my favourite movie quotes ever; Lucas: 'Don't worry Joe it's going to be alright' Joe: 'And what makes you think that?' Lucas:'Who knows where thoughts come from, they just appear.'
