Although the tale has been told before, the saga of American journalist Henry Stanley's search for missing missionary David Livingstone in what was, in the 1880s, darkest Africa was ripe for a revamp. Aidan Quinn is excellent as Stanley, Nigel Hawthorne even better as Livingstone. Unlike Stanley and Livingstone, starring Spencer Tracy, this film explores the relationship between the two men once Livingstone is found alive and well and how Stanley's life was changed subsequently. The production looks good although there's little sense of the dangers of the African bush. Still, that's a minor quibble, because this is a well made and absorbing film.
