A sort of cross between the Remains of the Day, The Servant and Edgar Allan Poe, and one that doesn't begin to work, hitting a much too farcical note from the first frame. 'George always gives us a good strong ham,' says ome of the characters in this East Lynne-with-maggots, a comment that might apply to an all-too-distinguished cast that also includes Jim Carter, Steven Mackintosh and Anna Massey. It's executive producer Trudie Styler, though, who gives the film's best performance - not a difficult feat admittedly. She alone strikes the right note in this Gormengast for, well, grotesques. Director Davidson's documentaries about Amazon Indians are rather more impressive than his uninspired handling of this mock-Gothic farrago.
