Jack Nicholson gives a heartrending performance as an embittered alcholic who plots to kill the drunken driver (David Morse, also ideal), now freed from jail, who ran over and killed his seven-year-old daughter six years earlier. The poignant reunion of Nicholson and his real-life former lover Anjelica Huston in a couple of scenes together is the highlight of this very dark and sombre movie, compellingly handled by writer-director Sean Penn, who shows his obvious involvement with the project by the care he lavishes on every moment of screen time. Such a frankly depressing film was nobody's idea of a fun night out in the cinema, but on TV it's well worth your time and patience if you get in the right kind of mood for it. The great Nicholson knows how to propel it over its bumps and longueurs.
