Not many films are popular enough to reach their third sequel, but this series has kept genial Chevy Chase and Beverly D'Angelo in deserved gainful employment. This trip looks like it might be the last one though, as Clark and Ellen Griswold and their teenagers (Ethan Embry, Marisol Nichols) head for the bright lights of Vegas. For, alas, truly funny jokes are as rare as hitting the casino jackpot, and the movie has a scrappy, hasty look about it that belies its eight years in the planning since the previous Christmas Vacation. Hooray, then, for Randy Quaid, back on amusing form as Chevy's oafish cousin Eddie, residing on an old desert nuclear test site. Randy's chaotic household is a stopover well worth making, even if the rest of this Vegas vacation is missable.
