Elizabeth Hurley was in the producer's chair for this big screen 'ER' with an added dose of mystery - the main question being: how did she manage to get her then-boyfriend Hugh Grant the starring role, let alone have him headlined above Gene Hackman? Hugh plays Guy Luthan, a doctor who starts to investigate the mysterious disappearance of a patient who died soon after he was brought into the emergency room dressed only in a plastic sheet and a medical tag. When he starts to ask questions, Guy comes up against countless dead ends - one of which inevitably leads to his life being threatened. It's not bad as conspiracy thrillers go, but it isn't a patch on the superior Coma, which it's clearly trying to emulate. Hackman is good as delusional scientist Dr Myrick and, as for Grant, well, thankfully he keeps his upper-class English accent. It would have been too much to make him attempt a New York drawl. The suspense has its moments.
