Director David Lynch's mind-stretching thriller unfolds with all the logic of a dream. It's a story that plays with parallel worlds, fused (and confused) identities and the occult. Briefly, jazz musician Bill Pullman finds himself, after a bewildering sequence of events, awaiting execution for the murder of his wife (Patricia Arquette). The next day, a stranger is found in his cell... It would be impressive (and more satisfying) if all this made sense at the end, but this is not Lynch's game. The result is a surrealistic, intriguing jigsaw, albeit one with much nudity, blood-letting and bad language, as Lynch shrewdly caters for the casual trade as well as the aficionados. The performances are suitably enigmatic.
