Friendship and loyalty are the themes here, as Jonathan Taylor Thomas's Tom Sawyer and Brad Renfro's Huck Finn face a life-or-death decision when they witness a killing. Can they put fear aside and save an innocent man from the gallows? Director Peter Hewitt brings out the darker elements of this robust Mark Twain story - The Adventures of Tom Sawyer - playing down its sentimentality but stressing the moral and eerie sides of the tale. The result is a good-looking, faithful and meticulously realised Disney adventure movie that's still relevant for today's young audiences. The two lads do a decent job with their lead roles and Eric Schweig makes a splendidly creepy Injun Joe.
