The director first attracted attention for the comedy drama Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey.
The cult hit, starring Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter, was a follow-up to the highly successful Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure.
He has since graduated to the hit children's movies The Borrowers, Thunderpants and live action cat caper Garfield.
Hewitt graduated from Britain's National Film School in 1990 and the same year wrote and directed The Candy Show (which one a BAFTA for best short film).
After Bill & Ted, he directed the family adventure Tom & Huck and children's classic The Borrowers, starring John Goodman and Jim Broadbent.
Whatever Happened To Harold Smith? lampooned the Seventies while Thunderpants told the tale of a boy who uses "windpower" to propel a spaceship.
In 2004, in his first American movie, Hewitt directed the live action version of the kids' cat caper Garfield.
