Biblical epics usually suffer from one of two problems. They are either too reverentail and therefore boring or they are given the Hollywood touch, making them colourful but lightweight. This made-for-TV epic almost avoids both hurdles. Thanks to director Nicholas Roeg, Samson and Delila looks great and the action scenes are exciting. . In between them, though, things get a bit dull. Eric Thal is a muscular but uncharismatic Samson, while our own Elizabeth Hurley plays the delectable Delilah. The strong supporting cast includes Michael Gambon, Diana Rigg, Daniel Massey and Paul Freeman, and just to liven things up, Dennis Hopper is cast as a Philistine general. This is a much edited version of the original four-hour marathon shown in the States, so much of the tedium has been edited out, making this an enjoyable if unexceptional saga.
