Jennifer Lopez was nominated for a Golden Globe as the title character, a real-life Latin music singer aiming to hit the big time when, tragically, her fan club president shot her dead. The portrait of the songbird starts with the discovery of her talent at age 10. With the help of real concert scenes, the film charts her rise to Mexican fame, her secret marriage, and runs up to her untimely death in her early 20s. Lopez is a good choice to play the Mexican vocalist Selena Quintanilla, though few other roles are fully-rounded - apart from her father (the reliable Edward James Olmos). There's none of the showbiz backbiting you would perhaps expect - and too many soppy moments between dramatic scenes. There's not much explanation, either, of why Selena met her death. Lopez fans, though, won't want to miss this relatively early look at their idol.
