This is an art-house film for dedicated students of the cinema. In saying that, it is not at all pretentious but experiments with valid cinematic techniques. It's a neo-realistic piece which, if not shot in actual time (High Noon being a classic example of that), envelops a burgeoning panoply, rather like a time-lapse camera filming the opening of a flower bud. As a jogger prepares for his matutinal exertions, he contemplates the waking of Rome. The stories and vignettes which ensue make for fascinating viewing. The only criticism of a worthy piece is the fact that its existentialist feel is somewhat dissipated by its affectionate tone.
