Starship Troopers

It's Melrose Place meets Aliens in this fantastic B-movie throwback from action maestro Paul Verhoeven. Four all-American teenagers with unfeasibly shiny teeth (step forward Casper Van Dien) prepare for combat against an alien insect race. Denise Richards is the gun-toting heroine who gets a chunk taken out of her by a giant pincer. Ouch.

Starship Troopers

Remember the Fifties, when husky film heroes battled such hairy horrors as Them! , Tarantula and The Deadly Mantis?

Well, the bugs returned with a vengeance in the late Nineties, first in Men in Black, and then a whole army of them from outer space in this violent, exciting, ultra-nasty movie for fans of modern sci-fi.

There's some good tongue-in-cheek black humour, which adds to the ferocious action, and the two leads keep the balance of comedy and emotion to just about the right level.

When the brainy bugs obliterate Buenos Aires, they pave the way for blood-scrunching inter-planetary warfare.

The battles that follow make for pretty thrilling viewing, with amazing digitally realised arachnids, although one siege at a fort is strictly cowboys and Indiebugs, as the aliens clamber up the ramparts waving pincers or whatever, while fire-breathing mother bugs bring up the rear.

Heroine Denise Richards (then wife of Charlie Sheen) would surely have bled to death from the massive pincer wound she seems to have forgotten by the end!

From "We are going in on the first wave. Just means more bugs for us to kill" To "The God dam bugs wacked us Johnny." This movie rates as one of the best sci-fi schlock movies of all time.

This is one of those movies which highlights the future that many kids want to grow up into - a future where humans travel the universe in giant warships and kill giant bugs! Of course, this isn't just about killing bugs. It follows the story of a group of kids flung into battle after their city is destroyed. The story follows the paths of a couple, Denise Richards becomes a starship pilot while Casper Van Dien becomes a grunt. Gripping stuff and well worth a watching!

This is one of those films that, although it is complete nonsense, it's absoloutley brilliant. This films combo of hammy acting and unstoppable and extremely gory, yet frequently, darkly humorous violence make for a very enjoyable watch. This is a film about the human race defending ourseves from anhialation at the hands of alien "bugs", by either filling them with bullets or blowing them to smytherines with mini nuclear bombs. Simple plot, dark comedy and a poor script. Excellent . . . somehow
