Along with 1965's Shakespeare Wallah, this was the movie that brought worldwide recognition to the highly acclaimed film-making team of Merchant-Ivory. Jennifer Kendal (sister of Felicity) plays Lucia Lane, an American writer who travels to India to watch the filming of one of her novels. Once on set, she becomes romantically involved with both screenwriter Hari (Zia Mohyeddin) and the handsome young leading actor Vikram, played by Kendal's real-life husband Shashi Kapoor. Although halting in places, the film's volatile catalogue of jealousy and intrigue represents an entertaining examination of culture clash. There's also some spectacular colour camerawork and a superb music score by Shankar-Jaikshan.
