This fictionalised version of the 1987 Oxford versus Cambridge boat race must have looked good on paper - it could be sold as an updated Chariots of Fire. Unfortunately fire is exactly what the film lacks. There's plenty of water in the soggy script but absolutely no spark in either writing, handling or performances. Real-life participants complained it didn't happen like this, but the problem with a film riddled with such hollow dialogue and so many wrong-looking details is that it can't make you believe anything we see here is real. Dull as ditchwater.
