The Royal Shakespeare Company actress's big break came opposite Kevin Costner in the The Postman in 1997.
After training at Bristol Old Vic, her US tour of Richard III opposite opposite Ian McKellen raised her profile with Hollywood casting agents.
Following her success in the otherwise disappointing The Postman, she landed a role in the sublimely quirky Rushmore.
Her standing was raised opposite Bruce Willis in the accomplished chiller The Sixth Sense and in the film adaptation of Martin Amis' novel Dead Babies.
A role in the popular A Knight's Tale never made it to the final cut although she played the romantic interest opposite James Nesbitt in Lucky Break.
Her stock began to rise again with her role of a cuckolded sister in The Heart of Me and Lady Anne in Mike Barker's To Kill A King.
She can also be seen in the submarine thriller Below and takes the role of Mrs Darling in the live action version of Peter Pan.
