An engaging coming-of-age tale about two adolescents from very different backgrounds in late 19th-century Nebraska. Joseph Sargent's film (based on Willa Cather's novel) ably evokes period and place and a close-knit farming community. The cast is strong, too, with the youngsters, Antonia and Jim, played convincingly by Elina Lowensohn and Neil Patrick Harris and strong portrayals of the young man's grandparents from Jason Robards and Eva Marie Saint. The relationship between Antonia and Jim develops well from love into a strong friendship - even if the script rushes certain key moments and veers away from the book's detail. A well-acted, moving piece of drama.
