Maggie Smith and Michael Caine are smashing as a pair of married ghosts; former stage actors, who appear in the house that thirtysomething bachelor James Spader has just bought. Spader has just lost his family publishing house to a big business; and his long-term girlfriend Polly Walker, tired of waiting, has left him. Smith and Caine are on hand to offer him advice on love and relationships - ironically, since they spend most of their time bickering. The yarn is entertaining, the jokes are amusing and the acting is as polished as you'd expect in this civilised little entertainment pleasure. Smith and Caine starred together in California Suite in the Seventies. Marcia Gay Harden, Sam Shepard and Valerie Perrine are also in the very good cast.
