A bizarre romantic fantasy that doesn't even play fair by its own rules, nor make any sense in its own screwball world. Up in Heaven, two angels (physical opposites Holly Hunter and Delroy Lindo) are given an ultimatum: get an American millionairess (Cameron Diaz) and an impoverished Scottish cleaner (Ewan McGregor) to fall in love, or spend eternity on Earth. Don't ask why - they certainly don't. So, as fate engineers it, McGregor kidnaps Diaz and demands a million-dollar ransom, only to find her willing to co-operate on upping the ante on her hated father (Ian Holm). Meanwhile, Hunter and Lindo pose as bounty hunters to bring the couple together, leading up to an ending that goes completely haywire. McGregor and Diaz are personable enough, especially in a delightful song-and-dance sequence, to make you think the whole thing might have worked better by dropping the heavenly element entirely. Uneasily welded to the kidnap plot, it renders the film neither fish nor fowl.
