Based on the autobiography by Primo Levi (John Turturro), this tells the emotional and harrowing tale of his internment in the German concentration camp Auschwitz in 1944. He was one of the few survivors of the camp, which was eventually liberated by the advancing Russian army towards the end of the war and this is the place where the film really begins. With retreating Germans all around Levi must make the difficult journey back to his beloved Italy alone. Even though its episodic structure breaks up the dramatic impact of Levi's nine-month odyssey that takes him through Russia, Romania, Hungary, Austria and Germany, the film still has its powerful moments, offering an unusual insight into Holocaust survival.
