The respected actor caused a storm for his explicit sexual performance with Margo Stilley in Michael Winterbottom's taboo-breaking 9 Songs.
A TV and movie veteran, he made his big screen debut in 1987 as "the boy" in the crime drama Bellman and True with Bernard Hill.
He first attracted attention as Stephen "Gruey" Grucock in the children's TV series Gruey the following year and went on to star in Stig of the Dump.
In 1989, he starred in the TV horror film Monster Maker with Harry Dean Stanton and also appeared in the kids's hospital drama Children's Ward.
O'Brien first worked with director Winterbottom in the acclaimed TV detective series Cracker with Robbie Coltrane and also played Craig Lee in Coronation Street.
In 1999, he returned to the big screen with the comedy drama Virtual Sexuality and he also featured in the Steven Spielberg mini series Band of Brothers.
Re-teaming with Winterbottom, he starred in Madchester satire 24 Hour Party People starring Steve Coogan and also appeared in TV's Dalziel and Pascoe.
After 9 Songs, O'Brien was again cast by Winterbottom alongside Coogan and Gillian Anderson in Tristram Shandy.
