Narrated by Denzel Washington and Louis Gossett Jr, this is a corrosive and Oscar-nominated documentary about the experiences, humiliations and small triumphs of black soldiers during World War Two. The weakest section lies in a lecture given to a synagogue audience: the presenter has clearly been through this before and tends to lean towards over-melodramatic effects. But there is still much to admire in this insightful and thought-provoking film: a bonus for vintage fans is the appearance of Lena Horne singing for the troops. It's an important window on a forgotten side of the war.
