Kevin Smith, director of Clerks and Mallrats, conjures up a star-studded, ambitious and imaginative comedy about two fallen angels (Ben Affleck, Matt Damon) who find a loophole in church dogma that allows them return to Heaven via a church portal, thus proving God fallible. Bold to tackle religion in a mainstream Hollywood comedy, and it paid the price of its intelligence at the box office, but this is an always amusing, often funny film, with a surprisingly lighthearted, easygoing nature. And the distinguished cast fires it up nicely.

The controversy caused by this film (mostly in the States, it should be mentioned) was ironically funny in itself as Kevin Smith is a devout Catholic. However all that gumpf is of no interest to me as the film is quite simply brilliant. I refuse to concede that Affleck and Damon are rubbish. Alan Rickman has quite surprisingly bagged a good guy role in an American movie and Salma Hayek outdoes herself when her character is introduced. This is all good fun, remember it's just a story.

This film manages to approached a very sensitive area - religion - with comedy, action and fantasy. This film uses a very good use of hybrid genres and manages to represent each character in a very effective way as none of the characters are at all similar. In my opinion, even though this film caused outrage, it was very well made and it ensured people were aware of some of the silly things people do for their religious beliefs.
