Oz director Emma-Kate Croghan had a cult hit in '98 with Love and Other Catastrophes, but this one finds her treading familiar ground and going nowhere; a change of course looks beneficial next time round. Very nicely shot, if not very interesting, this is the story of three Sydney girls and their inevitable collision course with three Sydney guys during one year, whereupon - can you buy this? - lightning strikes on New Year's Eve. Meant to be warm, atmospheric and nostalgic, the film rarely hits any of its targets, in spite of enthusiastic turns by Claudia Karvan, Naomi Watts and Alice Garner as the girls. Ordinary.
