Kit-off Kate Winslet goes the Full Monty again in this outrageously peculiar film about an Australian girl inducted into a charismatic sect and the eccentric American 'exiter' (Harvey Keitel) brought over to sort her out. Isolated at a desert hut, she at first confounds him, then seduces him by taking her clothes off and peeing in the sand. The girl's family background is like something out of a broad but madcap comedy, while director Jane Campion seems to be inviting her cast to play for laughs yet still extract poignancy from the situations. The role of the exorcist who ends up wandering the Outback in a red dress and lipstick is yet another of those that probably only Keitel would want to play, and the whole thing has the feel of a Spanish movie rather than one from Australia. It must be the heat out there.
