Scientology's favourite son plays a 10-ft tall alien baddie in a sci-fi schlockbuster based on the book by 'Church' founder L Ron Hubbard. Travolta alone is almost worth the ticket price. Which is just as well, since there's precious little else to enthuse over in this messy mix of Planet of the Apes and Independence Day. As scheming security head of offworld strip-miners who invaded Earth a millennium earlier, Travolta walks tall with a tongue-in-cheek performance that's pure pantomime Klingon. Reportedly hacked back after thumbs-down US previews, Battlefield Earth is muddled and unengrossing, despite some impressive special effects. Director Roger Christian does his best, but when he got there this Hubbard was bare.
