A wildly ambitious, ravishing-looking romantic epic from the Oscar-winning director of Burnt by the Sun has everything it needs except brevity. Richard Harris stars as Douglas McCracken, who travels to Russia in 1885 to sell his new timber harvester in Siberia. Julia Ormond comes to Moscow to help him, and falls in love with a young Russian officer, played by Russian star Oleg Menshikov. Give or take a few complications and a few more characters, that's about it for three hours. Fuelled by decent acting and some splendid set-piece highlights, the stretched-out yarn stays the course, though who knows whether audiences will with this absurdly long running time.
