A low-key account of Dublin's famous investigative journalist Veronica Guerin, here called Sinéad Hamilton and played by Hollywood's Joan Allen with an Irish accent that might pass muster if you're not Irish. The film goes routinely through her pursuit of local druglords and gang chiefs, culminating in almost inevitable retribution after she brings an assault charge against Public Enemy No 1 (Gerard Flynn). An attempt to portray Sinéad's home life is helped by a sympathetic turn from Kevin McNally as her husband. But interesting possibilities are largely ignored in favour of cold, clinical beatings and murders on both sides of the law in this flatly directed film.
