Unlucky-in-love Abbie (Madonna) gets very drunk with gay best friend Robert (Rupert Everett) and whoops! They're parents.
Abbie asks him to choose - be an uncle to the boy, or a proper father. Since Robert decides on the latter and proves an exemplary dad for six years, your sympathies are all with him when she falls for cheesy Benjamin Bratt (from TV's Law & Order) and, after a confrontation, takes the boy away altogether.
The film looks intended as romantic comedy rather than romantic tragedy but this is how it turns out under a director who was probably aiming for a bitter-sweet tone.
A lot of this is inevitably arch and uncomfortable, but Everett is good and always in character - more than a match for Madonna at all times.
