Renée Zellweger is excellent but she's still outclassed by Vincent D'Onofrio in this entertainingly romantic movie. It tells the real-life story of Thirties Texan teacher-writer Novalyne Price's passionate, but doomed affair with cult pulp fiction writer Robert E Howard, creator of Conan the Barbarian. The pair show true sparky chemistry in an intimate, sweet and unusual movie with lots of sharp dialogue and good period atmosphere. It had little box-office chance at cinemas, but will be ideal on TV. A perfectly cast D'Onofrio just luxuriates in his weird part.
